What is Beersies?
Beersies helps accepted friends discover when they plan to be near the same place at the same time, making it easier to arrange a real-life catch-up.
Who can use Beersies?
You must be at least 16 years old and create an account with a verified email address.
Does Beersies track my current location?
No. Beersies does not access your device’s GPS, current location, or background location. You choose a city or town, or manually place a pin on the map.
What does a manually placed map pin do?
Beersies stores the coordinates and name you select and uses them to find accepted friends with overlapping dates within 50km. When you confirm a pin, your device’s geocoding service identifies its country where possible and Beersies assigns a time zone for its availability dates. A pin in the ocean or another place with no country result can still be saved without a country. The pin is chosen by you and is not your device’s live location.
What does Map View show?
Map View uses a red pin for a saved location, a beer pin for one or more Beersies Matches, and a green clock pin for one or more Near Misses. When a trip creates a Near Miss, the green pin replaces its redundant red saved-location pin. Nearby pins may be grouped until you zoom in. Tap a beer or green clock pin to view the relevant cards. The map does not show your device’s live location or track you in the background.
What is a Near Miss?
A Near Miss appears when an accepted friend selects a location within 50km of yours, but one trip ends exactly one day before the other begins. The card explains whether your friend arrives the day after you leave or leaves the day before you arrive. Near Misses are shown in the app and on Map View, but do not send push notifications or emails.
Who can see my Beersies information?
Only accepted friends can receive a Beersies Match or Near Miss involving you. A match can show your name, selected location, overlapping dates, and calculated distance. A Near Miss shows your name and selected location, but not your complete trip dates; the other person sees their own location and dates plus a one-day timing explanation. Nobody can view your full list of locations and dates unless you separately select them in Share locations & dates.
How do I share my full list of locations and dates?
Open Profile, select Allow selected friends to view my full list of Locations and Dates, choose the accepted friends you trust, and save your changes. No friends are selected by default. A selected friend can view your saved active location names, countries, and date ranges, but cannot edit them.
Can I stop sharing my locations and dates?
Yes. Return to Share locations & dates, untick that friend, and save your changes. Access also requires the person to remain an accepted friend. Match and Near Miss information may still appear as described above while you remain friends. Removing access stops future viewing through Beersies, but it cannot retrieve screenshots or other copies already made outside the app.
Can I copy or forward a friend's locations and dates?
Not without that friend's express permission. All information shown in Beersies about another person is private between that person and the accepted friends authorised to see it. It may be used only to arrange genuine catch-ups and must not be screenshotted, copied, recorded, forwarded, published, or otherwise distributed outside Beersies in any form without permission. This does not prevent a disclosure required by law or reasonably necessary to report an immediate safety concern. Beersies cannot technically prevent or retrieve a copy after information has appeared on another person's device, so grant access only to people you trust. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Beersies Limited is not responsible for another user's independent misuse outside its reasonable control; this does not remove any responsibility or legal right that cannot lawfully be excluded.
What does “Plan Beersies with” share?
The button opens your device’s share sheet with a suggested message containing your friend’s name, the match location and dates, calculated distance, and a Beersies link. Nothing is sent until you choose a recipient and a messaging, email, or other sharing app. The selected app controls whether the suggested message can be edited before sending.
What does “Share Travel Plans” share?
On a Near Miss card, this button opens your device’s share sheet with a suggested message containing the location, your own trip dates, the one-day Near Miss timing, and a Beersies link. It does not include your friend’s complete trip dates. Nothing is sent until you choose a recipient and an app.
How do push notifications work?
You can choose match notifications and friend-request notifications separately in Profile. Your phone must also allow notifications for Beersies. The in-app preference controls which optional notification categories Beersies sends, while the phone setting can block all Beersies notifications. Near Misses do not send push notifications.
Why are notifications allowed on my phone but switched off in Beersies?
The phone permission and Beersies preferences are separate. Allowing the phone permission makes delivery possible, but you must also enable the notification categories you want in Profile. If the phone permission is denied, enabling an in-app preference cannot override it.
What happens when I tap “Open Beersies” in an email?
A match email opens the Matches page. A weekly friend-request email opens the Friends page with the Friend requests list expanded. If your device cannot open the app, the link displays a Beersies webpage with another option to open or download the app.
How do friend invitation links and QR codes work?
From Invite Friends, you can share an invitation link through a messaging app or show a QR code to friends in person. A shared link remains active for 7 days and a QR code remains active for 15 minutes. Each invitation can be used by up to 20 different friends. Every person must sign in and choose to send you a friend request, and you must accept each request before you become friends.
Can someone forward my invitation?
Yes. A recipient can forward a link or show the QR code to somebody else. Anyone with the valid invitation can ask to connect with you, up to its 20-person limit and before it expires. Only share invitations with people you trust, and review the name and profile photo on every request before accepting. You can deny, report, or block an unwanted request.
Does scanning a QR code automatically add someone as a friend?
No. Scanning or opening an invitation never creates a friendship automatically. It opens Beersies, asks the person to sign in if needed, and lets them choose whether to send a request. You remain in control of whether to accept it.
What information does Beersies collect when I share an invitation?
Beersies records the invitation owner, type, expiry, usage count, and security timestamps. It does not access your address book, WhatsApp contacts, messages, or learn whom you send or show the invitation to. After signing in, a person with a valid invitation can see the owner's name and profile photo before deciding whether to send a request.
Why was my profile photo rejected?
New profile photos are checked automatically for adult, highly suggestive, or violent content. A photo that exceeds the safety thresholds is rejected and its temporary upload is deleted. Try a clear, appropriate photo without graphic or sexual content.
Can I remove my profile photo?
Yes. Open Profile, select Edit profile, and choose Remove profile photo.
How do I report or block someone?
Use Report friend for a connected friend or Report request for an incoming friend request. You can also block a user. For a child-safety concern, email hello@beersies.org.
How do I delete my account?
Open Profile, scroll to Account, and select Delete profile. This permanently removes your Beersies account and associated app data.
Will Beersies work with a VPN?
Usually, yes. If Beersies cannot load while a VPN is active, try another VPN server or temporarily disable the VPN. Beersies does not detect, record, or attempt to bypass VPN usage.
Why is the map grey or the app unable to load?
Check that your device has internet access. A VPN, private DNS service, firewall, or network filter may sometimes block Google Maps, Firebase, or Beersies.org. Try another network or VPN server and then reopen the app.
Why do I need to accept updated Terms or Privacy Policy?
When either document changes, Beersies asks you to review and accept the current versions before continuing. This ensures your account records the versions you accepted.
